How to Use Command™ Picture Hanging Strips

Hang picture frames and artwork the easy way. Here's how to apply Command™ Picture Hanging Strips.

Command™ Picture Hanging Strips make decorating quick and easy — no tools necessary. One click alerts you that the Picture Hanging Strips are locked in and holding tight. Best of all, they’re damage-free. When you’re ready to move or remove your pictures and frames, they come off clean — no nail holes, cracked plaster or sticky residue.

Easy to Apply

Key tips to know before applying Command™ Picture Hanging Strips:

  • Wait 28 days after painting before use. Do not apply strips to paper or soft surfaces on the frame.
  • Remove hanging hardware from the back of the frame.
  • Do not hang over beds or on wallpaper.
  • Do not hang valuable or irreplaceable items.
  • Use indoors 10ºC - 40.5ºC.

Failure to follow instructions carefully may cause damage.

  • Step 1 of how to use picture strips - clean wall before using command strips

    Wipe wall with rubbing alcohol. Do not use household cleaners or water.

  • Step 2 of how to use command frame hanging strips - separate strips, then click them together.

    Separate strips. Click strips together.

  • Step 3 of how to use command to hang pictures -  remove one side of liners, stick on frame, and press firmly.

    Remove one side of liners. Stick on frame as shown. Press firmly.

  • Step 4 of using 3M command strips - remove remaining strip liners and press frame to wall

    Remove remaining liners. Press frame firmly to wall.

  • Step 5 of using 3M hanging strips - remove frame from wall, peel frame, press strip for 30 seconds

    To ensure adhesive hold, temporarily remove frame from wall to reinforce strips. Peel frame as shown. Press each strip on wall for 30 seconds.

  • Step 6 of using Hanging Strips - wait 1 hour for adhesive to build. Align strips and press frame

    Wait one hour for adhesive to build. Align strips. Press frame until each pair of strips clicks.


Easy to Remove

For damage-free removal, slowly stretch the strip straight down against the wall.

    Grab bottom corners and peel frame from wall. Do not pull straight off.

  • Step 2 of removing command strips - pull straight down on the strip; not pulling away from wall

    Always pull straight down on the Command strip; never pull away from wall.

  • Step 3 of removing command strips

    Stretch strips slowly against the wall at least 15 inches (38 cm) to release.

Command™ adhesive holds strongly to a variety of surfaces: painted, stained or varnished wood, glass, tile, metal, painted drywall and other smooth surfaces.

Types of surfaces where Command™ Picture Hanging Strips can stick

Do not use Command™ Products on textured walls or surfaces, wallpaper, brick, rough or non-stick surfaces, or fabrics.
